Each year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County celebrates two exceptional matches that showcase the life-changing power of mentorship. These inspiring relationships highlight how mentoring not only helps youth achieve their biggest possible futures but also leaves a lasting impact on mentors.

The 2025 Bigs and Littles of the Year finalists each have unique stories that reflect the heart of our mission.

Cathy Engle & Paris | Matched since 2022

Cathy and her Little, Paris, share a bond filled with adventure, learning, and support. From kayaking trips and comic book outings to celebrating Paris’ Student of the Month Award, Cathy’s consistent encouragement has empowered Paris to excel academically, build confidence, and embrace new experiences. Through thoughtful outings and heartfelt support, Cathy exemplifies “It Takes Little to Be Big!

Kristina Senft & Lizlee | Matched since 2022

Kristina has been a steadfast mentor for Lizlee, guiding her with care, consistency, and encouragement as she navigates her teen years. Kristina has helped Lizlee grow in confidence, embrace her passion for the arts, and explore new opportunities. Their bond has deepened over time, culminating in Kristina becoming Lizlee’s godmother! Kristina’s dedication has shown Lizlee that she will always have someone in her corner that supports and believes in her.

Leilannie Olnagan & Diana | Matched since 2021

When Aranza’s father—her best friend—passed away, she struggled immensely with grief, self-confidence and a sense of belonging. Thankfully, she had her Big, Leilannie, to provide guidance and comfort during this dark time. In one meaningful moment, Leilannie took her to the diner where her father once worked, creating a space for reflection and connection. With consistent check-ins and study outings, Leilannie has helped Aranza build back her confidence, improve her grades, and pursue her dream of becoming a nurse—despite being told she couldn’t because of her disability. Te'a Lynch & Vanessa | Matched since 2023

Vanessa and Te’a have built a meaningful friendship rooted in consistency and positivity to weather life’s storms. When familial stressors led Vanessa to seek mental health support and start homeschooling, Te’a was there to plan outings to relieve stress and get Vanessa out of her environment. Just by showing up consistently with a listening ear, Te’a helped Vanessa regain her confidence, enjoy school again, and even embrace a new role as a church group leader. Their connection exemplifies the power of mentorship in creating stability and fostering growth through genuine friendship.

Teryn Apple & Perla | Matched since 2022

After the devastating loss of her mother, Perla struggled with anxiety and academic pressures. Teryn became a steady source of support and encouragement during this time, bringing light into Perla’s life by sharing joyful moments like ice skating, dancing and study sessions. With Teryn’s guidance, Perla regained focus, improved her grades, and rekindled her passion for learning. Now a high school senior, Perla is excelling academically and plans to pursue a nursing degree. She credits Teryn’s unwavering belief in her as the foundation for her confidence and optimism about the future.

Evan Lee Loy & Brandon | Matched since 2023

When Brandon joined BBBS, he rarely spoke up because of speech and comprehension differences, causing him to struggle both socially and academically. He quickly found a true friend in his Big, Evan, whose patience and encouragement created the safe space Brandon needed to shine. Always leading with empathy, Evan has gone above and beyond to introduce his Little to new people and experiences, which has helped Brandon’s confidence grow exponentially in just a year and a half. Now in 8th grade, Brandon is excelling in all honors classes at school and is proud to share about his experiences, even documenting his adventures with Evan on his own private YouTube channel!

Gregory Williams & Alfredo | Matched since 2022

After a battle with childhood cancer left Alfredo physically and emotionally drained, his mom hoped a Big Brother could help her son rediscover his joy for life. Enter Gregory, who quickly bonded with Alfredo over their shared love of sports, especially football. Over the last two years, Gregory has been Alfredo’s biggest cheerleader and coach, guiding him through some of his toughest emotional and physical hurdles. When Alfredo feels sidelined because of his health or self-conscious about his treatment scars, Gregory is there to boost his confidence and create new, fun memories to last a lifetime.

Joohong Lange & Jacob | Matched since 2023

Little Jacob needed someone to give him space to just be a kid again—and that’s exactly what his Big, Joohong, has done for nearly two years. Joohong has brought encouragement, kindness, and a sense of adventure into Jacob’s life, while also leading with vulnerability and teaching him it’s okay to trust, share, and ask for help. Beyond his impact on Jacob, Joohong is also a vocal advocate for mentorship, encouraging his coworkers to become mentors and taking a leadership role within the Big Collective to support fellow volunteers. With his Big’s support, Jacob’s grades have improved, and he now believes Joohong when he tells him the sky’s the limit!

Joshua Carranco & Bryan | Matched since 2022

After immigrating with his family from Guatemala, Bryan struggled adjusting to life and school in the U.S. He was bullied and his grades suffered because he didn’t understand the language, and kids picked on him for being different. Bryan’s mom hoped he’d find a friend in a Big Brother, but in Josh, they received community. From introducing Bryan to American staples—like diner hashbrowns—to making sure he had a hot wheels cake for his first birthday in the states, Josh has created a safe haven for Bryan to explore his new environment without judgement. Their instant connection has grown from friendship to family, and today, Bryan and his family are getting the support and resources they need to navigate this new chapter of life.

Ralph De Los Santos & Alessandro | Matched since 2021

Alessandro's journey from struggling dreamer to thriving college student is a testament to the power of consistent, caring support from a mentor. Over the past seven years, Ralph has been a constant source of encouragement and support for his Little, Alessandro, helping him overcome academic and personal challenges and instilling in him the confidence to dream bigger. Now a freshman on a full-ride scholarship at his dream school, Chapman University, Alessandro carries the lessons learned from his mentor into a future filled with purpose and determination.

Every year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County recognizes two outstanding matches that illustrate how the mentoring relationship helps youth achieve their biggest possible futures and makes a long-lasting impact on the mentor. The 2024 Bigs and Littles of the Year finalists all have distinct, inspiring stories that illustrate Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mission.

The two winning matches will be announced on January 30 as part of National Mentoring Month.

Beth Fujishige and Jassmin | Matched since 2016

Big Sister Beth and Little Sister Jassmin have developed a strong bond over the past seven years. Although their connection was immediate, the journey to understanding each other was not without its challenges. Through consistent outings, patience, and dedication, they created a safe space to be their authentic selves and formed a profound appreciation for one another. Jassmin, initially a cautious and spirited 9-year-old, has transformed into a vibrant high school sophomore, passionately exploring the worlds of physics and psychology with aspirations for a college education.

Bophary Ngin & Areli | Matched since 2020

Areli and Bophary started their match virtually in 2020 and have since developed a really special friendship. When Areli faced a challenging event in her life, Bophary was part of her support system offering encouragement and positivity. Areli is in a much better place now, and she credits Bophary for making a positive impact in her life. Areli is now in her last year of high school, and she looks forward to graduating with grades she knows she can achieve.

Jennifer Arnoldt and Jazelle | Matched since 2018

In 2018, Jennifer encountered 10-year-old Jazelle, a girl with dreams but struggling with self-identity and confidence. Recognizing Jazelle’s need to connect with her diverse heritage, Jennifer supported her through cultural exploration, including a dream of getting braids for the first time. Despite financial challenges hindering Jazelle’s academic journey, Jennifer’s determination secured a laptop donation, allowing Jazelle to excel in an early college academy. Beyond academics, Jennifer instilled valuable life skills, from swimming to setting a table to self-defense classes. In looking back at their time together, Jennifer expresses immense pride in Jazelle’s growth and foresees a bright future ahead.

Joanne Kim & Princesa | Matched since 2021

When Princesa joined our program, her mother had hoped that it would boost her confidence and help her express herself better. Fortunately, Princesa found a kindred spirit in Joanne, who actively fostered her growth and helped her find opportunities to showcase her love for art. This Fall, with the help of BBBS staff, the match had the chance to lead a pumpkin decorating event. After months of preparation, Princesa confidently presented her work, leaving the audience engaged and laughing. Not only did she support others with their pumpkins, but she also showcased her artistic talents by handcrafting earrings. Thanks to Joanne’s consistent support, Princesa has found a safe and encouraging space to grow, and their mutual encouragement has strengthened their remarkable bond.

Suzy Bucierka & Natasha | Matched since 2020

In 2020, 13-year-old Tasha found a dedicated mentor in Suzy during the pandemic. Though their connection began virtually during the pandemic, their friendship is now full of impactful in-person outings. Suzy, whose husband served in the military, supported Tasha in navigating her aspirations for a military career. The pinnacle of their relationship was marked by Suzy standing alongside Tasha during her quince, a significant cultural milestone. Beyond mentoring, Suzy’s commitment extended to advocacy for the organization, contributing to holiday gift drives. As Tasha tackles her junior year, Suzy’s unwavering support ensures she continues to explore her potential and triumph over challenges, highlighting the enduring impact of mentorship and the profound bonds it forges.

Antonio Alvarado & Daniel | Matched since 2018
In the initial stages of their match, Little Brother Daniel remained reserved, but Tony, drawing on his own experiences, never wavered in his support. Empathizing with Daniel’s journey, Tony carefully observed Daniel’s unique qualities and preferences, crafting outings that were both enjoyable and enriching. Through this thoughtful approach, Daniel gradually opened up, revealing his true personality. This strengthened their bond and enabled Tony to provide effective mentorship throughout the last couple of years. As Daniel embarks on his final year of high school, the foundation of trust and connection in their relationship remains strong.

Chris Pyon & Angel | Matched since 2015
Over the span of eight years, Angel and Chris have been unwavering pillars of support for each other. When Angel encountered challenges and insecurities in school, Chris took proactive steps to ensure his comfort and provide support. Angel has a deep appreciation for the impactful lessons in kindness and self-acceptance that Chris has taught him. Chris continues to be a consistent presence in Angel’s life, commemorating milestones like graduation and maintaining regular monthly meetings as part of our Alumni Association.

Grant Chase & Connor | Matched since 2021

Connor’s mom got him involved with BBBS to have a positive male role model in his life. Connor expresses his emotions differently than others, which often makes communication with his peers difficult. Through his patience, care, and consistency, Grant was the first person to be able to truly connect with Connor on his level. More than a year into their match, Grant noticed that Connor was starting to smile for the first time and that they were having more meaningful conversations. Connor’s mom is grateful to see his development and grateful that Grant became the role model that Connor needed.

Luc Matthews & Isaac | Matched since 2021

Isaac’s mom enrolled him in the program with the hopes of finding him a consistent, positive male role model. His Big Brother Luc has risen to the occasion, bonding with Isaac over their mutual love of sports. Through frequent games of basketball, they work on self-discipline, resilience, and commitment. Through BBBS, Luc was able to secure a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Isaac to attend a Lakers game with courtside seats. Today, Isaac plays basketball at the YMCA regularly and has shown increased self-discipline and resilience.

John Conant & Jayden | Matched since 2019

In 2019, 11-year-old Jayden’s life took a transformative turn when he met his Big Brother, John. John’s mentorship extends beyond the ordinary, imparting crucial life skills to Jayden, such as changing a tire and riding a bike. Recognizing the importance of presence and commitment, John consistently reached out to Jayden during the pandemic, emphasizing that he was there for him during a time of loneliness and isolation. Now a high school sophomore, Jayden is excelling with John’s active involvement in his personal and academic growth.
